BEDUC 406: DAILY BLOG 9/10/09

I observed some great things from my Master teacher today. One of them was when she was talking to the kids about finding the right fit for a book. She had the kids sit down on the carpet to listen to her read a book, which was the intro to what she had planned. During the read aloud, she asked questions and had the kids talk with one another about what was happening in the book, which was Petunia, by the way. All of this conversation led into the plan of talking about books and why it's important to read them, which was the primer to introducing the kids to her library.

The best part was watching the kids get really into what she was doing and talking about. They weren't sitting there bored as she preached about her library. Rather, she brought in different styles of shoes (athletic, dress, hiking, flip flops, and one of her husband's shoes) to further illustrate the interest, purpose, and ultimately, the fit of a good book. She would take the shoe out, ask them what it was, what was the purpose etc. The kids loved it.

When she came to her husband's shoe, she put it on and tried to walk around in...illustrating that she liked the shoe, she could put it on, but it didn't help her walk so it just wasn't a good fit. The kids loved it: they were engaged, laughing, and responding to her questions. I think this kind of demonstration really helped the kids understand the idea of what is a good fit, and why for a book for themselves. It was really fun to watch! And I could totally see myself doing it too!
